Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appealed to the Palestinians on Monday to renew peace talks and win an independent state, saying he was prepared to make major confidence-building gestures like freeing Palestinian prisoners and releasing desperately needed funds. Israel would be prepared to reduce checkpoints that have severely restricted movement in the West Bank, release hundreds of millions of dollars in desperately needed transfer payments frozen after Hamas took power in March, and free some of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners Israel holds in exchange for a serious push for peace, Olmert said.
